We present a report of a 37-year-old female with lung abscess due to Acremonium species that responded to oral itraconazole. There was a marked clinical as well as radiological improvement in patient. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of lung abscess due to Acremonium species which was treated by oral itraconazole. This cost-effective treatment modality proved to be significant in improving symptoms as well as morbidity in this patient.
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS or drones) could potentially be used for the routine transport of small goods such as diagnostic clinical laboratory specimens. To the best of our knowledge, there is no published study of the impact of UAS transportation on laboratory tests.
Here we report on a novel polymer electrolyte membrane for quasi-solid dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with excellent efficiency and extended durability. The electrolyte is prepared by an elegant, rapid and cheap UV-induced polymerization method and the chemometric approach is used for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, for the optimization and the fine tuning of the experimental conditions.
We present a case of progressive disseminated histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent traveler. Histoplasmosis was acquired in South America; its manifestations included prolonged fever, splinter hemorrhages, erythema multiforme, arthritis, and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. To the best of our knowledge no splinter hemorrhages had previously been reported in a patient with histoplasmosis.
Intracranial meningiomas without dural attachment (MWODA) are rare entities. We present the first case published, to the best of our knowledge, regarding a MWODA attached to the ventral surface of the brainstem. This location makes the patient subsidiary to treatment through an expanded endonasal transclival approach.
Bismuth-doped optical fibers and fiber lasers operating in 1625-1775 nm range have been developed for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Now the existing bismuth-doped lasers, including the result presented in this Letter, can cover O, E, S, C, L, and U telecommunication bands. In addition, new data on the nature of the bismuth-related active center were obtained and discussed.
The authors present a case of anterior sacral meningocoele demonstrating a clinical picture of cauda equina syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, such presentation has not yet been reported.
Both enchondroma and atypical cartilaginous tumors (ACT) are not considered malignant, so inactive and asymptomatic tumors might not need surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that has been done to evaluate the natural course of conservative-treated enchondroma and ACT in the long bones.
