We report an unusual case of bilateral eyelid erythema caused by eyelash glue. A 22-year-old woman presented with a 3-day history of bilateral eyelid dermatitis after attaching false eyelashes by using latex-containing glue. Slit-lamp examination revealed erythema and swelling of the upper lids of both eyes. The skin prick test was positive for eyelash glue and her total tear IgE score was high. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of bilateral eyelid dermatitis caused by eyelash glue.

Eyelashes are ubiquitous, although their function has long remained a mystery. In this study, we elucidate the aerodynamic benefits of eyelashes. Through anatomical measurements, we find that 22 species of mammals possess eyelashes of a length one-third the eye width. Wind tunnel experiments confirm that this optimal eyelash length reduces both deposition of airborne particles and evaporation of the tear film by a factor of two. Using scaling theory, we find this optimum arises because of the incoming flow’s interactions with both the eye and eyelashes. Short eyelashes create a stagnation zone above the ocular surface that thickens the boundary layer, causing shear stress to decrease with increasing eyelash length. Long eyelashes channel flow towards the ocular surface, causing shear stress to increase with increasing eyelash length. These competing effects result in a minimum shear stress for intermediate eyelash lengths. This design may be employed in creating eyelash-inspired protection for optical sensors.
The WHO definition of trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is “at least one eyelash touching the globe, or evidence of recent epilation of in-turned eyelashes”, reflecting the fact that epilation is used as a self-management tool for TT. In Fiji’s Western Division, a high TT prevalence (8.7% in those aged ≥15 years) was reported in a 2012 survey, yet a 2013 survey found no TT and Fijian ophthalmologists rarely see TT cases. Local anecdote suggests that eyelash epilation is a common behaviour, even in the absence of trichiasis. Epilators may have been identified as TT cases in previous surveys.
Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are mites that are responsible for human demodicosis affecting skin and frequently linked to ocular diseasess. The aim of this work was to determine the association between Demodex sp. and eyelid and eyelash diseases and to establish the predisposing factors for acquiring this parasitic disease. Eyelashes from symptomatic and asymptomatic patients (n=72) between 9 and 82 years old were analyzed, where 53% were positive for Demodex sp., of which 66% manifested ocular symptoms and pathologies, blepharitis and dry eye being prevalent. Significant correlations between Demodex and patients over 60 years of age (p<0.001) and between Demodex sp. and dry eye patients / blepharitis (p<0.001) were observed. We consider that it is necessary to search for Demodex sp. especially in those patients suffering from dry eye and blepharitis and/or during immunosenescence in order to implement specific antiparasitic treatments.
Eyelash trichomegaly (ET) is increased length (≥ 12 mm), curling, pigmentation, or thickness of eyelashes. Among acquired causes, allergic diseases and atopic dermatitis (AD) have been found to be associated with eyelash trichomegaly especially in children; however, to date, this claim has not been studied in detail. To compare the eyelash lengths of AD and ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) patients with those of age- and sex-matched patients with unrelated skin disorders, we measured (with a digital Vernier caliper) and compared the eyelash lengths of AD (n = 58) and IV (n = 31) patients to those of age- and sex-matched patients with unrelated skin disorders (n = 178). The eyelashes of the AD and male IV patients were found to be significantly longer than those of the controls (p < 0.05). The severity of atopic dermatitis, i.e., SCORAD of > 50, hyperlinearity of palms and soles, and high IgE levels significantly correlated with the long eyelashes. The limitations of study are single-center study and filaggrin gene mutation in patients of IV could not be studied.
To evaluate the use of autogenous tarsal graft for surgical correction of lower eyelid trichiasis associated with eyelid thinning.
The objective of the study is to compare the frequency of Demodex on the eyelash follicle of patients with rosacea and referents without rosacea or ophthalmological disorders.
Over a 2 year period a 32-year-old woman developed swellings of all 4 eyelid margins accompanied by complete loss of eyelashes. An inflammatory dermatologic condition was considered the most likely cause. A full thickness right lower eyelid biopsy revealed a multinodular lymphoid tumor at the eyelid margin which immunophenotypically and genetically was diagnosed as an extranodal marginal zone lymphoma. The mode of presentation of the disease was considered to be most unusual, as was its B cell lineage, since the majority of primary cutaneous lymphomas are of T-cell origin. Systemic workup demonstrated bilateral involvement of the external auditory canals.
Hypereosinophilic syndrome is a hematologic disorder in which the eosinophils proliferate. Oral Janus kinase inhibitors are known to be effective treating hypereosinophilic syndrome. Janus kinase inhibitors have also demonstrated efficacy in alopecia. Madarosis is a condition in which the eyelashes are missing or absent and can been seen in alopecia patients.
The presence of intraocular eyelashes following penetrating eye injury or ocular surgery is relatively uncommon. The response of the eye to intraocular eyelashes is variable. The eyelash may be symptomatic or may remain asymptomatic for long periods.
